Family vehicle use rarely follows one simple routine. One parent may take the vehicle to work, another may need it later, and weekend plans can involve several stops. School schedules, appointments, errands and family activities can all place different demands on the same vehicle.
Kia Connect
Kia Connect adds connected functions that can help with some of these everyday tasks. Through a smartphone app, owners of compatible vehicles can access features such as remote climate control, door lock status, vehicle location and charging station information.
Kia Digital Key can also provide vehicle access through a compatible smartphone or smartwatch, while Map Over-The-Air Updates help keep navigation map information current.
For families that share a vehicle or spend much of the week on the road, these connected features can fit into many parts of the day.
Kia Connect is a connected car service available through a smartphone app. You can enroll through the app or online.
For mobile enrollment, users download the Kia Connect app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. New users can then select the enrollment option and follow the instructions.
The service is free for the first three years. Subscription plans are available after the initial period.
Once set up, Kia Connect provides access to compatible connected vehicle functions from a smartphone. Different features can serve different family needs, from cabin preparation before departure to vehicle location after a busy day away from home.
Getting a family out the door can involve coats, bags and other items before anyone reaches the vehicle. Weather can add another factor to the routine.
Remote Start with Climate Control lets you remotely start a compatible Kia and set the interior temperature. The cabin can therefore begin to warm or cool before the family gets inside.
The feature can suit many points in a family schedule:
The function operates through Kia Connect, so the user can control the temperature remotely instead of waiting until everyone is inside the vehicle.
A family schedule can create plenty of distractions after everyone leaves the vehicle. Bags need to be carried, children may head toward the destination, and attention can quickly shift away from the parked vehicle.
Kia Connect provides Remote Door Lock/Unlock for compatible vehicles. The app can show the vehicle's status and allow the user to lock or unlock the doors remotely.
The feature works beyond normal key fob range.
This can help when someone reaches a destination and later wonders whether the doors were locked. Instead of returning to the parking space solely to check, the user can view the status through Kia Connect and use the remote lock function when necessary.
Remote unlocking can also provide another way to access the vehicle when the key fob is not within normal operating range.
A large parking lot can look very different several hours after arrival. Families may enter a shopping centre, event, or other destination and return later without a clear memory of where they parked.
Find My Car supports these situations.
Kia Connect remembers where the vehicle was left and can guide the user back to its location. This can provide a useful reference when the parking location is unfamiliar or difficult to remember.
Family outings that may involve larger parking areas can include:
Instead of relying only on a row number or visual landmark, Kia Connect can keep the vehicle location available.
Households often share vehicle responsibilities. One person may drive in the morning, while another needs the same vehicle later in the day.
Kia Digital Key provides another option for compatible vehicles. It allows a smartphone or smartwatch to provide vehicle access and support vehicle operation without the conventional key fob.
Digital Key capabilities can also be shared with family and friends.
For households with more than one driver, this creates another way to coordinate access. The physical key fob does not have to serve as the only method for eligible users.
Possible family uses include:
Digital Key puts compatible vehicle access in a device many people already carry throughout the day.
Families that use an EV or PHEV have another task to consider during their travel routine: charging the battery.
Kia Connect includes a Charging Station Locator. The system can notify the user when the battery is low and guide them to the nearest charging station.
This feature can be useful when the family travels beyond familiar routes. Drivers may already know their usual charging locations near home, but unfamiliar areas may require additional information.
Charging Station Locator can provide that information through Kia Connect.
For a family day out, the feature can help connect the vehicle battery status with the next available charging location. It can also provide additional support during longer trips when the route moves beyond familiar charging areas.
Navigation can play a role in many family trips, especially when the destination is unfamiliar.
Kia Connect supports Map Over-The-Air Updates, also known as Map OTA. This service helps keep the Kia navigation system up to date.
Map updates can be downloaded through the head unit inside the vehicle. This means owners do not have to manage the map update through a separate process or take the vehicle to a dealership specifically for the update.
On average, two map updates are available each year.
For a family vehicle used for a mix of familiar and unfamiliar destinations, current navigation map information can support trips to appointments, activities and other locations outside the usual daily route.
The usefulness of Kia Connect comes from the variety of tasks its features can address.
A single family day can involve several separate interactions with the vehicle. Remote climate control may help before the first departure. Door status can provide a check after everyone has walked away. Find My Car can help later at an unfamiliar destination.
For households with compatible vehicles and devices, Digital Key can provide another access method when family members share driving duties.
Some examples include:
Not every household will use each feature with the same frequency. The functions are available for different situations throughout vehicle ownership.
Kia Connect also includes services that extend beyond remote vehicle controls.
The listed Care plan features include:
Enhanced Roadside Assistance enables the vehicle Breakdown button to contact a roadside assistance service provider. The feature itself does not include roadside assistance coverage.
These services add assistance-related functions alongside the remote and convenience features available through Kia Connect.
For families, the range of functions means the connected system is not limited to tasks such as adjusting cabin temperature or checking door locks. It also includes features related to emergencies, vehicle occupants and roadside assistance contact.
Kia Connect service is free for the first three years.
As that period ends, users can choose from available subscription levels. The plan structure includes Care, Plus and Ultimate.
Plus adds features to the Care level, while Ultimate adds features to Plus.
This structure provides options for continued Kia Connect service after the initial free period. The right level depends on which connected functions a household wants to keep.
Connected vehicle functions rely on mobile network infrastructure, and changes to that infrastructure can affect older systems.
Bell plans to discontinue its 3G/HSPA network. The process starts in Manitoba on December 31, 2025, with other provinces to follow.
Some Kia vehicles rely on 3G technology for Kia Connect, which was formerly known as UVO.
As the 3G network becomes unavailable in an area, affected vehicles that depend on that technology will no longer have operational Kia Connect services in that location.
The change applies only to affected vehicles that rely on 3G technology, not to every vehicle equipped with Kia Connect.
A family vehicle can serve several purposes within the same day. It may handle a commute in the morning, errands in the afternoon and a family activity later on. Different drivers may also share the same vehicle throughout the week.
Kia Connect provides digital tools that can fit around those changing routines. Remote Start with Climate Control can prepare the cabin before departure, while Remote Door Lock/Unlock provides access to door status after the vehicle is parked. Find My Car can help at unfamiliar destinations, and Charging Station Locator provides charging support for EV and PHEV drivers.
Kia Digital Key adds another access option for households that share vehicle duties, while Map OTA provides periodic navigation map updates through the vehicle head unit.
These features give families several ways to manage compatible vehicle functions from connected devices, whether the day involves a familiar routine or a schedule with several different destinations.
