2027 Kia Sportage: Hybrid Choices for Busy Family Lifestyles

2027 Kia Sportage: Hybrid Choices for Busy Family Lifestyles

Family vehicles rarely have just one job. A normal week can include school drop-offs, work commutes, grocery stops, appointments and after-school activities. Then the weekend arrives with extra bags, sports equipment or plans that take everyone farther from home.

2027 Grey Kia Sportage HEV

2027 Grey Kia Sportage HEV

The all-new Kia Sportage offers two electrified powertrain choices for those changing routines. The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) combines gasoline and electric power without the need to plug in. The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) adds a larger battery, external charging and an estimated 53 km of all-electric range. Both versions come with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Families can also choose among EX, EX Premium and SX trims with either powertrain. The result is a Sportage lineup with different combinations of comfort, technology and driver-assistance equipment, while the basic SUV layout remains familiar.

Two Hybrid Choices for the Family Schedule

The Sportage HEV uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine, a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery.

The gasoline engine produces 177 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor contributes 65 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The combined output is 232 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque.  Estimated five-cycle fuel consumption is 6.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 L/100 km on the highway and 6.7 L/100 km combined. Regular unleaded fuel is recommended.

The PHEV uses the same displacement and basic gasoline engine configuration but pairs it with a larger 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery and a more powerful electric motor. Combined output increases to 268 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque.

This gives families two different ways to add electric power to everyday transportation.

Electric Range for Shorter Daily Trips

School, work, activities and errands can add several separate drives to a normal weekday. The PHEV adds the option to cover suitable shorter distances with battery power.

Its estimated all-electric range is 53 km. Estimated fuel consumption is 6.6 L/100 km in gasoline operation and 2.8 Le/100 km combined when electricity is included.

The PHEV supports Level 2 charging at 240 volts, with an estimated charge time of two hours. Level 3 fast charging is not supported.

The HEV takes a different approach. It does not require an external charging routine, which may suit households that prefer a conventional hybrid setup.

Both choices retain a gasoline engine, so the Sportage can also handle days when family travel extends beyond the usual local routine.

AWD Across the Sportage Lineup

Weather and road conditions do not always cooperate with the family calendar. All Sportage HEV and PHEV trims listed in the document have all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

EX models also include Drive Mode Select, Shift-By-Wire and trailer package pre-wiring.

The Sportage uses a steel unibody N3 platform with MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. Its chassis equipment includes an electronic parking brake, four-wheel anti-lock braking system, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Assist Control, Downhill Brake Control and Trailer Stability Assist. Minimum ground clearance measures 210 mm.

Passenger Room for Everyday Family Life

The Sportage measures 4,685 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,678 mm high, with a 2,755-mm wheelbase.  Inside, front legroom measures 1,052 mm in both versions. The HEV provides 1,050 mm of rear legroom, while the PHEV has 1,004 mm. Shoulder room measures 1,461 mm in the front and 1,412 mm in the rear. Front hip room is 1,392 mm, with 1,357 mm in the back.

Headroom varies according to sunroof configuration. Without a sunroof, there is 1,006 mm in front and 1,000 mm in the rear. Models with a sunroof provide 962 mm of front headroom and 968 mm in the rear.  These measurements clearly show the differences families may want to consider, particularly the variation in rear legroom between HEV and PHEV models.

Cargo Room for Sports, Groceries and Getaways

Passenger space is only part of the family equation. A vehicle may also need to accommodate backpacks, grocery bags, sports gear or luggage within the same week.

Both Sportage powertrains have 60:40 split-folding rear seats. That setup lets families keep part of the second row available while creating additional room for longer items when necessary.  Cargo capacity differs between the HEV and PHEV. The HEV provides up to 1,119 litres behind the second row with the cargo floor in its low position. Fold the rear seats and capacity reaches 2,087 litres with the floor low. The PHEV provides 977 litres behind the second row and 1,855 litres behind the first row.  Roof rails are standard on the EX versions of both powertrains.

EX Covers Many Family Essentials

The EX is the starting trim for both the HEV and PHEV, and its standard equipment includes several features that can become part of the daily household routine. Synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard. The driver receives a power seat with two-way lumbar support, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel is also heated. Dual-zone climate control lets you set separate temperatures up front. Rear air vents and a rear floor heating duct extend climate support to second-row passengers. Auto defog climate control is also included.

Other standard comfort features include:

  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Illuminated and sliding sun visors
  • Keyless entry
  • Power windows
  • 12-volt power outlet
  • Two USB charging ports
  • Heated windshield
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Rear privacy glass

These features apply to the EX specification for both electrified powertrains.

Cabin Technology for a Full Day Out

Family transportation often means several people, several destinations and several devices.

The EX has a 12.3-inch navigation system with HD Radio and SiriusXM. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay provide smartphone integration, while Bluetooth and a six-speaker audio system are standard. It also includes a wireless phone charger, Smart Key, and push-button start. An electronic chromic mirror with HomeLink and a remote car starter are part of the standard technology package.

Kia Connect adds remote functions through a compatible smartphone. These include remote door lock and unlock, remote start with climate control, Find My Car and remote vehicle status checks. The system can report the status of the doors, windows and trunk, along with information such as the odometer and fuel percentage.

PHEV-specific functions include battery and charging status, charging controls and scheduled charging.

Driver Assistance for Busy Family Routes

School zones, parking lots, city streets and highways can all appear within a single day. The Sportage EX includes several driver-assistance systems for those different situations. Highway Driving Assist 1 and Smart Cruise Control 2 with Stop & Go are standard. Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist 2 are also included.

Other standard features include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5
  • Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist – Rear
  • Front and rear Parking Distance Warning
  • Rear-View Camera with dynamic parking guidelines
  • Rear Occupant Alert
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Eight airbags

The PHEV EX lists the same core driver-assistance features.

EX Premium Adds Family Comfort

The EX Premium adds several features that can make a difference when you spend more time in the vehicle. A Smart Power Liftgate provides another way to access the cargo area. It also adds a panoramic sunroof, power-folding side mirrors,s and LED fog lights. Inside, the driver seat gains memory settings, and the front passenger receives a power-adjustable seat. Air-cooled front seats supplement the standard seat heat, while rear passengers gain heated seats. Premium pedals, premium door scuffs and satin chrome interior handles are also part of the EX Premium specification. The PHEV EX Premium receives the same listed additions.

SX Expands Parking and Highway Support

The SX adds more driver-assistance technology, providing additional information around the vehicle. Surround View Monitor offers views around the Sportage, while Blind View Monitor adds another visual aid. Front, side and rear Parking Distance Warning expands the parking sensor coverage.

The SX also adds:

  • Highway Driving Assist 2
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2
  • Rear Parking Collision Avoidance Assist
  • Remote Smart Park Assist

Technology also expands with a 12.3-inch Supervision Cluster, Harman/Kardon premium sound system, TFT-LCD Head-Up Display and Digital Key 2.0. The same additions apply to the PHEV SX.

Extra Capacity for Family Weekends

Some weekends call for more than the cargo area can hold. The Sportage has a standard towing capacity of approximately 750 kg and a maximum trailer weight of approximately 907 kg when properly equipped. Trailer package pre-wiring is standard on the EX HEV and PHEV, while Trailer Stability Assist is also included.

2027 Kia Sportage: Two Electrified Options for a Busy Household

Family schedules can change quickly, and the new Kia Sportage offers two electrified powertrains in the same SUV format.

The HEV produces 232 combined horsepower and has an estimated combined fuel consumption rating of 6.7 L/100 km. It requires no external charging and provides up to 2,087 litres of cargo capacity behind the front seats with the cargo floor set low.

The PHEV produces 268 combined horsepower and adds a 13.8-kWh battery, 53 km of estimated all-electric range and an estimated two-hour Level 2 charge time. It provides 977 litres of cargo room behind the second row and 1,855 litres behind the first row.

Both come with all-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, split-folding rear seats and a choice of EX, EX Premium and SX equipment levels. From weekday school runs and work commutes to weekends with more people and gear on board, the Sportage HEV and PHEV provide two ways to fit electrified power into the changing demands of family life.
